ADVERTISING A BURGER OR A BODY TYPE?

When looking at this ad I think of pretty, thin, cool, good, and fit. There are multiple people being depicted in the ad. There is also a variety of races and ages. They look to be at a hotel and are by the pool, that is why everyone is in their bathing suits. The main character is a tall slender girl, who looks to be 20-22. She is wearng a light blue bathing suit with pictures of little burgers on it. She is Miss Turkey, and is eating Carl's Jr new turkey burger, while strolling by the pool side. The camera is below the subject but also at eye level so that we could get a view of her surronding but also of the turkey burger. Since she is outside, I assume that there is natural lighting, but there also seems to be some artificial lighting. The colors in this ad are not very bright. They put Miss Turkey in a red dress so that we can spot her fisrt, and then in a bright blue bikini so we can also distinguish her after she takes the dress off. At the end of the commercial, there is the Carl's Jr logo and their advetised turkey burger.

The purpose of this ad is to sell the new Turkey Burger. It is advertised for mostly teens to adults, because they have the money to pay for the burger.Carl's Jr advertisies this burger in a very smart way. For their female audience, they choose to use a slender, tall, beautiful model so they can image and want to be like her. She is Miss Turkey, wearing a crown and sash, so we associate it will Miss United States, a beauty pagent winner, etc. So we know that she has been crowned beautiful. Females want to be like her. For the male audience, they also choose the tall, slender, beautiful model to be eating their burger. Males are attracted to the model, and they then associate the model with the turkey burger. Here they create a connection. Beautiful model and a turkey. Even in the beginning of the commercial they state "To help you remember our delicious new broiled turkey burger, we hired Miss Turkey." Without clearly stating it, they drive the message home.

Even though the assumptions might seem silly, people really do believe them. For women it is eat Carl's Jr burger and you'll have the attetion that Miss Tukey had. You'll be able to look like her and act like her and everyone will love you. For the men, the assumption is that buying a turkey burger will also get you a Miss Turkey. Or they will look for a Miss Turkey on thier own. It really isn't about the turkey burger, but more about the model.

The fact that a model that thin is eating a burger is unreal. How can we mange to eat burgers and still look like this? Teens are attracted to this image and girls want to look jsut like that. Of course, Miss Turkey isn't overweight, but that's were she will go with all those burgers she is eating. They picked a slender model, and thats really all girls see. The need to be thin and beautiful.  For the guys no Turkey Burger will ever come with a Miss Turkey. This ad creates unrealistic expectations for teens today.

THE TRUTH FROM TEENS

I think that this video really sheds some light about what real teens are feeling about their body image. I think that everyone can relate to something that these people said. It is important to read and watch things like this, because this is the truth. These are teens that are feeling the same way that we are. These people admit it and are ready to talk about what really is going on in their mind. Instead of watching false advertisments and worrying about the media we should be watching more things like. We should unite and talk about one of the issues we all have in common, our body image.

These three ads, which are in Seveenteen magazine, are really good pieces that help young teenagers feel more secure with their bodies today. The fact that there are three differnt looks for three differnt body types are really amazing. They help teens find an image that they can relate to, and then look for fashion tips from their. The consumers don't have to feel pressured to try to fit in a slender girls look and body type. This ad shows that there are differnt body types, and that not everyone is skinny like the models shown throughout the magazine.

CRITICAL THINKING QUESTION

Q: How you feel when you see the portrayls of teenagers in the media today?

ANSWERING MY INQUIRY QUESTION...

Q: What idea does media give teens about their body image?

A: The media has created a perfect image for both genders. Women have to be tall, thin, and beautiful. Men on the other hand, have to be also tall, good looking, and muscular. Even though these portrayls are wrong, there what drives the image of beauty today.

IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE ME?

This ad looks fun, pretty, girly, colorful, and happy. There are five girls depicted in the ad. They look young, between seventeen and nineteen . They are a variety of races, white, black, and asian. They look stylish, young, and happy. This shot was taken from a low angle, so we would be able to take in the scence. The lighting looks natural, with no shawdows. The background is white, so that our eye is drawn to the girls first, because of the sharp contrast. There is text in the ad, it is medium sized and in pink and black letters. There is also a circle with small black text in the corner and squares also with text, under each girl. The main text states, your little black dress, and a description below. The circle advertises the clothing, which is a seventeen Macy's exclusive. The squares with text say, classic, edgy, glam, girly, and flirty, also with another description.

The purpose of this ad is to sell Macy's dresses, which were created just for this ad in seventeen magazine. We get a sense of relationship between the two brands. I do find the products appealing, since I am who this ad is being targeted to. I like the dresses and the way they are being styled. This ad is being targeted to teenagers and very young adults, even though ounger girls are now picking up the magazine. I feel that if I wear this clothes, I will look these models. This ad does a great job at marketing to a wide variety of girls. They include a variety of races and fashion styles. By including classic, edgy, glam, girly, and flirty, the magazine makes sure to advertise to different types of girls. They make sure that all kinds of girls will be able to look at this and say, I can wear this. The text, one here for every vibe, encourages that.

This ad makes many assumptions. For example, it makes all girls look fun, girly, flirty, and beautiful. The main message is toward body image. All these girls are very thin and tall, at least 5'9. Girls with other body types are not represented in the add. All the girls are also very pretty. They have perfect skin and hair, well they seem to be perfect. We as consumers get the feeling, that if we buy those Macy's dresses, we will be able to look like the models in the ad. We will be happy and look prettier. Or, we can also get the feeling that if we don't look like the girls in the ad, we won't be able to pull off those dresses, and look just as great as them, and therefore have a great time. This ad makes us criticaly look at ourselves. Also since the prices of these dresses are between $60-$70, we assume that middle class girls to wealty class girls can wear this look.Seventeen really is trying to create the perfect image for a girl. It has all types of different sections. from beauty, fashion, health, and love life. All the ads it has shows tall, pretty, slender girls. This is what we have to be. It doesn't show the real side of girls.

This ad, and magazine, make most girls unhappy with themselves. With the starting mentality that they are just brushing up on their fashion and beauty, makes girls in the end dislikes themselves. Girls get depressed, get eating eating disorders, and just feel unhappy. They really just want to look like these girls, no matter what it takes. They go to extremes. The don't love themselves for who they are and what really matters, what is in the inside.
